Plastering in Glastonbury

It depends on the size of the room, whether it needs a skim over sound plaster or a full re-plaster back to brick, whether ceilings are included, and how easy the access is. I don’t publish a price list, because a figure given without seeing your walls would only mislead you. I’ll come and look at the job and give you a clear quote. A skim is a thin finishing coat, usually 2 to 3mm, applied over plaster or plasterboard that is still sound. Re-plastering means taking the old plaster off back to the brick or block, then building the wall up again with backing coats and a finish. If your existing plaster is blown, hollow or crumbling, a skim over it won’t last, so I always check before recommending one or the other.

As a rough guide, a skim coat takes a few days to a week to dry, and thicker backing coats take longer. It depends on the weather, the heating and the ventilation. New plaster turns from dark pink or brown to an even pale pink once it’s dry. Let it dry naturally rather than blasting it with heaters, keep the room ventilated, and use a mist coat of watered-down emulsion as the first coat of paint so it soaks in and grips.

Yes. A lot of my work is in older Somerset properties: cottages and farmhouses with thick stone walls, deep window reveals and old timber beams. Solid walls like these need to breathe, so I’ll often recommend lime-based plaster or render rather than modern gypsum or cement, which can trap moisture in the wall.

Yes. I do internal and external rendering, including traditional lime render for older buildings. Whether it’s a whole wall or a section that has blown, I’ll recommend the render that suits what the wall is made of.

Yes, but I’ll look for the cause first. Plaster that has failed because of damp will fail again if the water keeps getting in. Once the cause is sorted, I can remove the salt-damaged plaster, tank walls that need a waterproof barrier, and re-plaster with a suitable system.

It helps to clear as much as you can. Anything that can’t be moved gets covered, and floors are protected before I start. Plastering is messy work by nature, so I keep the mess contained and tidy up at the end of each day.
